The Road to Maturity - Song of Songs
Could the Bible include a book that celebrates the beauty of erotic marital love? You may be surprised to discover it does. The Song of Songs has caused not a little controversy. It was forbidden for Jews to read it until they were thirty years old! Some, including more than a few prudish Victorians, have questioned whether it should be in the Bible at all. Song of Songs evokes intense sensuous awareness - yet the poet achieves this with delicate subtlety. It’s an amazing book that on the surface is a love story between a shepherdess and King Solomon but at a deeper level it describes the journey of a believer seeking deeper intimacy with God.
It is for this reason that we have been teaching from The Song of Songs this term. It’s a wonderful book that, for us, charts the road to maturity for a believer who longs for more of God, the believer who is fed up of serving God from far off, down the road, at a distance; the believer who wants to be drawn to God in intimacy and run with him in ministry. It contains some profound truth. The realization that I am dark and lovely (1 v5) is an incredible truth. Have you ever considered that God views you as either dark or lovely? Have you ever written yourself off as dark and concluded that God has no time for you? The truth is you are dark and lovely all the time. God sees something innately precious in you that is well worth redeeming even though you have been darkened by ‘life under the sun’. He wants to draw you to his table and feed you with good things. He wants to heal your wounds, make you secure and call you to embrace battle and adventure with him. All this and more is in just the first two chapters of this amazing book. And that’s just the beginning!
